Mac fan noise can be a real nuisance, disrupting your concentration and raising concerns about your device’s health. But before you panic, understanding why your Mac’s fan might be running loud is essential. Common culprits include high CPU usage, dust buildup, and blocked air vents. Each of these factors can cause your MacBook fan to work overtime, creating those loud noises that drive you crazy.

Both MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models can experience loud fan noise due to dust buildup and high CPU usage.

Let’s break down these causes to understand better.

High CPU Usage

High CPU usage is a frequent cause of unexpected heavy fan use. When you run intensive tasks like video editing, gaming, or even multitasking with multiple applications open, your Mac’s CPU resources are pushed to their limits. As a result, the processing power required to handle these tasks generates heat, causing the MacBook fan to operate at higher speeds to cool down the internal components.

Managing your CPU usage is vital. Tools like Activity Monitor can help you identify which applications are hogging the most memory and processing power. If you notice your fan spinning up during these tasks, consider closing unnecessary apps or using alternatives that are less resource-intensive.

Applications like CleanMyMac can also assist in managing and reducing CPU strain, ultimately helping to reduce fan noise.

Dust Buildup

Dust buildup in your MacBook can be a silent but significant factor behind that noisy MacBook fan. Over time, dust can accumulate within the cooling system, clogging the air vents and hindering the cooling fan’s ability to expel hot air. This restriction forces the fan to work harder and spin faster, leading to increased fan noise and potential overheating. Dust accumulation on the fan blades can lead to increased fan noise and reduced cooling efficiency.

Regular cleaning of your MacBook’s air vents can help mitigate this issue. Using compressed air to blow out the dust and debris can improve airflow and reduce the strain on your cooling fans. Keeping your work environment clean and dust-free can also help minimize the accumulation of dust within your device.

Blocked Air Vents

Blocked air vents are another common cause of loud fan noise in MacBooks. When the air vents are obstructed, the cooling system cannot expel hot air efficiently, leading to a buildup of heat inside the device. This causes the cooling fan to work harder and faster, resulting in louder fan noise as it tries to cool down the internal components.

Keeping your MacBook’s air vents unobstructed maintains optimal airflow and reduces fan noise. Avoid placing your MacBook on soft surfaces like beds or couches, as these can block the vents and trap heat. Instead, use your MacBook on a hard, flat surface to allow maximum airflow and keep the cooling system working efficiently.

Software Issues and Malware

MacBook fan noise isn’t always due to physical factors like dust or blocked air vents; software issues and malware can also be culprits. When your MacBook is infected with malware, it can hijack system resources, causing the CPU to work harder and the fan to spin up more frequently. Similarly, certain software issues, such as resource-intensive applications running in the background, can lead to increased fan activity and noise.

To tackle these issues, it’s essential to keep your macOS and all applications up to date. Software updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes that can help reduce unnecessary CPU usage. Additionally, using reliable anti-virus software to scan for and remove malware can prevent malicious programs from overloading your system. Regularly monitoring your system’s performance and addressing any anomalies promptly can go a long way in keeping fan noise at bay.

Steps to Reduce MacBook Fan Noise

Now that we’ve identified the common causes of loud MacBook fan noise, it’s time to take action. Reducing your Mac fan noise involves a few practical steps: closing resource-heavy applications, ensuring proper ventilation, and cleaning the air vents. Regularly cleaning the MacBook Pro fan and other fans can prevent the device from running hot and reduce fan noise. These steps can help you maintain a quieter and more efficient MacBook.

Let’s explore each of these steps in detail.

Close Resource-Heavy Applications

One of the quickest ways to reduce fan noise is by closing resource-heavy applications. High CPU usage from intensive tasks can cause your MacBook’s fan to spin up to cool down the overworked processor. Applications like video editors, games, or even multiple browser tabs can significantly tax your system resources, leading to increased fan noise.

Activity Monitor helps you identify which applications are consuming the most CPU resources. Closing unnecessary apps frees up memory and reduces the load on your CPU, which helps in reducing fan noise.

If you frequently use graphics-intensive applications, consider switching to less demanding alternatives or closing them when not in use to keep your MacBook running quietly.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

Maintaining the efficiency of your MacBook’s cooling system requires proper ventilation. Using your device on a hard surface allows for better air circulation, helping the cooling fans to expel hot air and reduce fan noise. Using a MacBook on soft surfaces like beds or couches can obstruct the vents, leading to overheating and louder fan noise.

Always use your MacBook on hard, flat surfaces and avoid placing it on soft surfaces that can block air vents to ensure maximum airflow. Keeping the ambient temperature in your workspace moderate can also help in reducing the need for the fan to run at high speeds.

Good ventilation helps maintain an optimal operating environment for your MacBook, reducing both temperature and noise.

Clean the Air Vents with Compressed Air

Cleaning the air vents is a simple yet effective way to reduce fan noise. Dust and debris can accumulate over time, obstructing airflow and causing the cooling fan to work harder. Using compressed air to blow out the dust from the vents can significantly improve airflow and reduce the strain on your cooling system.

Regularly cleaning the air vents prevents future dust buildup and maintains optimal airflow. Make it a habit to check and clean your MacBook’s vents periodically, especially if you notice an increase in fan noise. This simple maintenance step can go a long way in keeping your MacBook running smoothly and quietly.

Monitoring Your MacBook’s Performance

Here’s everything about playing games from an external hard disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD): You can play games from an external HDD or solid state drive on a PC.

In order to do this, the computer just needs to know where to find the game when it is on another drive.

When you install the game, you have the opportunity to select where it is saved and ensure that your computer can find it.

So if you want to learn all about how to play games from an external hard drive or SSD, then you’re in the right place. This article will also address common questions and concerns in our ‘external hard drive faqs’ section, covering game storage, compatibility, and performance for optimal gaming experiences.

Can You Play Games from an External Drive?

Yes, you can play games from an external drive. Many gamers opt for this setup, especially when their internal storage is limited or they have a large game library. External drives, whether connected via USB or another interface, can store and run games just like an internal drive. However, it’s important to note that the performance of the game may vary depending on the speed of the external drive. Faster drives, like external SSDs, tend to offer better performance compared to traditional external HDDs. So, if you’re looking to play games from an external drive, ensure you choose one that meets the speed requirements of your favorite games.

How Do You Play Steam Games From an External Hard Drive or SSD?

There are a number of ways to install Steam games on an external drive, which is a great method for managing game libraries efficiently using external storage.

We’ll focus on the easiest, and that is to use the game installer to install it on the drive of your choice. We’ll talk more about what kinds of drives work later.

For this part, let’s assume you have an external USB hard drive, and that’s what you want to use for the game.

Even if you’re actually using a different type of device, the steps in this section will be the same. By the the way, find the 5 best external hard drives for gaming (or rather SSDs) here.

The first step is to connect the external hard drive.

Make sure it is properly connected and that the computer can communicate with it. The easiest way to do this is to pull up File Explorer (represented by a folder icon in Windows 10).

Navigate to your external hard drive and make sure you can open it and access the information on it.

As long as this works, you can move on to the next step.

Now, you want to pull up the game installer. There are countless different installers, so we’ll use Steam as an example.

If you are trying to do this with something other than Steam, you should be able to look up the steps on the game launcher’s website.

Log into Steam and browse your library to find the game you want to put on the external drive.

When you go through the installation steps, it should ask you where you want to install the folder.

It’s not obvious, but there is a drop-down menu at the bottom of the window that pops up when you start the installation.

Use that drop-down menu to pick the right folder on your external drive. Make sure to open the same folder on both your local and external drives to ensure the game files are correctly transferred.

If you can’t find the folder that you want, you may need to add it.

In that case, cancel the installation. Instead, go into your Steam settings. Under the settings will be an option for “downloads.”

In the window, you can choose “Steam library folders.”

Click on the + sign and create a folder where you want to store your games. To do this, you will first have to select the external hard drive.

You can then select the folder of your choice. You can also create a new folder right there in the menu if you want to.Now, you can try the installation again and choose the correct folder.

The game installer will go through its process and install your game on the drive that you selected. That’s all it takes.

You can use the game launcher to play the game.

You can even create a game shortcut on the internal hard drive that still runs the game that is actually installed on your external drive (although, in some cases, it can be a little complicated).

If you are installing a game that does not use a third-party launcher, the steps are pretty simple.

When the game is walking you through installation, it should ask you where you want to install the information. You can choose your external drive and folder of your choice during this step.

The installation will otherwise run normally, and your game will be on the external drive when it completes.

Can You Move Installed Games That Are Already Installed to an External Hard Drive or SSD?

Yes. You can move already installed games to your external drive.

For optimal performance, especially for PS5 games, it is necessary to transfer games from external drives to the internal SSD.

Once again, the methods involved depend on how you launch the game, so we’ll use Steam as an example this time around too. Ensure you are logged into the correct Steam account that owns the game before attempting to move it.

Ultimately, this can be done for any PC game; it’s just a matter of finding the right process.

You can start by signing into Steam. Click on “Steam” in the top left corner of the window, and then choose “settings.”

In the settings window that pops up, click on “Downloads.”

At the top of that window is “Steam library folders.”

Click it, and a new window will pop up. At this point, the steps look pretty familiar, but this is where it changes.

In this window, you should see a list of your Steam games.

Find the game that you want to move and click on it. It will check a box, and you will now see an option to “move” the game.

Click that button and select the folder of your choice listed above (you can still create a new folder here if you want to).

Once you do that, Steam will handle the rest.

There is an important note here.

The methods for moving a game depend on how the game launches, but in the vast majority of cases, you cannot simply drag a game folder from one hard drive to the other.

While that will move most of the game information, it will not build pathways that the launcher needs to find the file locations.

In other words, the game will fail to launch because the software doesn’t know where the game is actually located on your computer (or external drive).

What Are the Best External Hard Drives or Rather Solid State Drives For Gaming?

The best external hard drives for gaming are technically not hard drive discs but solid state drive.

The increasing sizes of modern games necessitate the use of external hard drives to enhance storage capacity and performance.

See below for more details.

Anyway, find the 5 best external hard drive discs (or rather solid state drives) for gaming here.

From the best overall to the best bang for your buck.

External HDD vs. External SSD: Which is Best for Gaming?

When deciding between an external hard disk drive (HDD) and an external solid-state drive (SSD) for gaming, it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of each. External HDDs are generally more affordable and offer larger storage capacities, making them ideal for gamers with extensive game libraries. However, they are slower in terms of data transfer and game loading times.

On the other hand, external SSDs are faster and provide a smoother gaming experience due to their quicker read and write speeds. This means games load faster, and overall performance is enhanced. The downside is that SSDs are more expensive and typically offer less storage capacity compared to HDDs.

For the best gaming experience, an external SSD is the superior choice due to its speed and performance. However, if you need more storage space and are on a budget, an external HDD might be the better option.

Are There Any Limitations on Which External Hard Drives or SSDs You Can Use for Steam Library Folders?

You cannot use any drive for this purpose. Instead, you want to find the right external hard drive.

The good news is that there is only one hard limitation. We’ll cover some soft limitations too.

In order to install a game on an external drive, you need to have enough space for the game.

That sounds obvious, but plenty of new games can be well over 100 GB in size.

They can eat up hard drive space faster than you might think, so your external drive might not be up to the task.

As long as you have enough storage space, you’ll be ok, and having more space can help manage larger game files.

Other than that, you have freedom here.

As long as the computer can talk to the drive, you’re in good shape.

With all of that said, there are types of drives and connections that are better than others.

Most external drives connect via USB. USB is very common, but it comes in a few different speeds.

Older USB (2.0) is universal, but it isn’t very fast.

Connecting a USB 2.0 drive will not be fast enough for high-end games to run well.

If you upgrade to USB 3.0, the vast majority of games will play just fine.

You can go even further and use USB-C. That’s even better, and can play even more demanding games without any issues.

Apropos of USB: Learn all about whether USB hubs work with external drives here.

You can also use drives that aren’t classified as hard drives.

Flash drives, SD (or micro SD) cards, and any other storage media can work. They just need enough space.

You can even use a hard drive enclosure with a traditional internal drive in it that connects to the computer externally.

Another method that is a little outside the scope of the original question is that you can install multiple internal hard drives in your computer and pick from any of them.

None of this will prevent the game from working.

Why Would Someone Play From an External Hard Drive or SSD?

There are two main reasons to install games on an external drive.

The first is portability.

If your game is installed on a flash drive or any other small device, you can take it with you.

That means you can plug that storage device into another computer and play your game (as long as the computer is compatible and capable of running the game).

Let’s go back to Steam as an example.

If you are visiting friends or family and want to show them your game, you can take your drive.

Sign in to Steam on their computer and plug in your drive. You can also install Steam on their computer to download games directly onto your external drive.

It should be able to launch the game just fine (although you might have to reset the folders in the settings to help it find the game).

What’s more, is that it will have all of your individual save states. It’s pretty convenient.

While that’s nice, it’s not the primary reason that people do this.

The bigger motivator is to save storage space on your internal drive.

Every drive has limited space, and upgrading to a bigger drive costs money (and can be a huge nuisance).

This is especially true if you opt for some of the fastest hard drives on the market.

Getting more storage pushes up the cost pretty quickly.

So, if you’re trying to save space, you can throw your games on a less-expensive external drive. It’s pretty simple.

Benefits of Using External Drives for Gaming

Using external drives for gaming comes with several advantages:

Increased Storage Capacity: External drives can significantly expand your storage capacity, allowing you to store more games without worrying about running out of space on your internal drive.

Portability: One of the biggest benefits of external drives is their portability. You can easily take your game library with you and play on different computers, provided they meet the game’s system requirements.

Easy Installation: Installing games on an external drive is straightforward. Most game launchers, like Steam, allow you to choose the installation location, making it easy to manage your game files.

Better Performance: External SSDs, in particular, can offer better performance than internal HDDs, leading to faster load times and a smoother gaming experience.

Overall, external drives provide a flexible and efficient way to manage your game library and enhance your gaming setup.

Are There Any Reasons Not to Play Games From an External Hard Drive or SSD?

All of that said, there is one compelling reason to avoid putting your games on an external drive: performance.

The best hard drives or rather solid state drives in the business right now connect directly to the motherboard using PCIe connectors.

These are the fastest connections you can get on a consumer-grade computer.

The incredible hard drive speeds you get from this technology can help with game performance in general.

Most external hard drives are considerably slower.

You can get solid state external drives that are reasonably fast, but they don’t match the speeds of PCIe SSD drives

The same can be said of large flash drives and other flash storage media.

One of the limiting factors is how external drives connect to your computer.

Typically, they will interface via some form of USB.

Even the fastest USB connection (USB-C) is noticeably slower than a PCIe connection.

So, if you want the best performance, you put games on the internal drive.

Still, plenty of USB drives are fast enough to play a game with no noticeable problems.

It’s only games that push the envelope of your computer’s performance that truly benefit from being on the internal drive.

You can absolutely try some games on the external drive to see if you like the performance.

If you do, then take advantage of it.

If you’re getting mixed results from your external drive, then you can follow a simple rule.

Put the games that need the most performance on your fastest drive.

Everything else can go on the external drive and save you space.

Learn all about whether games run slower or faster on external drive here.

Common Issues with External Hard Drive Gaming

While using an external hard drive for gaming can be beneficial, there are some common issues to be aware of:

Slow Loading Times: If you’re using an external HDD, you might experience slower loading times compared to an SSD. This is especially true for older or slower drives.

Compatibility Issues: Not all games are compatible with external drives. It’s important to check the game’s system requirements and compatibility before installation.

Drive Failure: Like any storage device, external drives can fail. Regularly backing up your game files can help prevent data loss in case of drive failure.

Connection Issues: Using a USB connection can sometimes lead to issues such as dropped connections or slow transfer speeds. Ensuring you have a reliable and fast connection, like USB 3.0 or USB-C, can mitigate these problems.

By being aware of these potential issues, you can take steps to ensure a smoother gaming experience when using an external hard drive.

By following this plan, the new sections should integrate seamlessly into the existing article, providing valuable information while maintaining the same tone and style.

Here’s everything about the parts of a laptop including their names and functions:

There are at least 17 components of a laptop, which include both the external and internal parts.

The external parts are mainly the screen also known as the LCD, top/bottom cover or case, touchpad or trackpad, and removable battery, while the most basic internal parts include the system board, the CPU, hard drive, memory modules, and WLAN module, among others.

So if you want to learn all about the parts of a laptop, their names, and their functions, then you’re in the right place.

Let’s jump right in!

What Are the Parts of a Laptop? (17 Parts)

Laptops have become a staple of modern-day life in the past two decades.

As most of life moved to the digital space, a portable personal computer offered so much more value. The evolution of laptop computers has significantly shaped our digital lives, making them indispensable tools for work, education, and entertainment.

You can just shut it closed and take the laptop anywhere with you. The complete ease and portability of laptops have allowed them to become the most common type of computers in existence today.

Most people prefer to have portable computers, be it for work, entertainment, or school.

Let us look at the main components of a laptop to better understand this staple device of modern life.

#1 Laptop Screen/Display Assembly

A laptop screen or display is the main interactive component of a laptop.

A display screen shows all the information you need to have to use a laptop. Not all laptop screens are created equal.

Some laptops come with large screens and others with smaller ones. In fact, it is a pretty common practice to use laptop screen dimensions to market the size of a laptop.

Display screens can range in size anywhere from 9 inches on smaller chrome book display screens to 17-inch display screens on a larger laptop.

These days there is almost too much variety in the type of display screen you can get on a laptop.

Laptops nowadays also have different screen resolution display for a different laptop.

Usually, resolutions start from 720p and go up to 4K.

You can even go for higher refresh rate displays that start from 60 Hz display and can go up to 300Hz.

A higher refresh rate screen is usually more common on gaming laptops since they allow the laptop to display higher frames per second.

For example, a 300hz refresh rate screen can change frames up to 300 times per second.

The display assembly usually also comes with either a plastic back for lower-end laptops or a metal back for more expensive ones. Metal ones are usually sturdier, and hence they wiggle led.

#2 Keyboard/Top Cover

The top cover assembly usually holds the keyboard and covers all the parts underneath its surface.

The keyboard is designed in a way that all the components lie underneath the top cover surface, including the layout of the keyboard keys which are crucial for typing and navigating the laptop. The ergonomic design of the keyboard supports users as they operate keyboard keys, enhancing the overall user experience by providing a comfortable space for hand placement and ease of use.

In some detachable screen laptops, components are usually behind the display assembly.

But in others, you will find everything underneath the top cover.

The top cover acts as an enclosure for the motherboard of the laptop, protecting the laptop against dust and other elements.

The enclosure also helps direct the airflow from the laptop’s cooling solution, most commonly a simple fan.

Like the back lid, the top cover can come in plastic and metal depending on how much money you want to spend.

Usually, a metal top cover offers a much more premium experience. But this quality can vary from model to model.

Each company likes to try out its own different finishes on the top cover. Some can be really nice; others are known to be fingerprint magnets.

The keyboard is one of the two main input components on a laptop.

Like a keyboard on any other PC, they allow you to type stuff and buttons for dozens of other functions.

Depending upon the size of the laptop and each model, the keyboard can be a full keyboard with the Numpad, or it could be TKL (TenKeyLess) keyboard that doesn’t come with a Numpad.

This allows the keyboard to come in a smaller form factor.

What keyboard you want can be based on personal preference as both are common keyboards that you can see on a laptop.

Another main differentiating factor about the keyboard can be their switch type.

Two main types are membrane-based switches and mechanical switches. Membrane-based switches are usually a lot cheaper and more common on a laptop.

They are quieter as well, so you will get a lot less angry stares from your colleagues as you type frantically on your keyboard.

On the other hand, the mechanical keyboard is totally the opposite and might get you kicked out of the office based on the color of switches on that keyboard.

Mechanical keyboards are much louder. But many PC enthusiasts prefer mechanical switches on their keyboard because they like the tactical feedback they offer and the particular typing sound you can get from a mechanical keyboard.

#3 Touchpad

The laptop touchpad is the second most crucial input component on a laptop after the keyboard.

Touchpads are, put simply, pads you can touch.

Jokes aside, touch-sensitive surfaces are housed within the top cover and usually below the keyboard in a laptop assembly. The touchpad functions as a mouse for the laptop.

Since Laptops these days need a way to pan and scroll around the display, a touchpad functions as the input component for that purpose.

The touchpad idea was a way to get around needing a mouse whenever you used a laptop as that would require a separate device to be carried around.

On the other hand, Touchpads are inbuilt and feed into the whole portability philosophy of the laptop.

Like everything else in life, all touchpads are not built equal.

They can come with different surface finishes like plastic or metal.

Depending on how well they are designed, touchpads can offer different user experiences.

Usually, touchpads on expensive laptops are more accurate, and their clicks are more consistent as compared to the laptops on a more budget side of the spectrum.

#4 Hard Drive

The hard drive is the main storage device on a laptop.

Whenever you save something on your computer, this is the component where that information is stored.

The hard drives use magnetic storage to store information. It contains a spinning platter with a thin magnetic coating.

An arm called the head moves over the platter writing 0s and 1s on really tiny areas on the platter.

When you need to retrieve that same information, the head goes back to the same spot and gets that stored information back.

Even though hard drives are still the most common storage device, many new devices now ship with another storage solution called Solid State Drives or SSDs.

SSDs are a much faster and more responsive storage solution.

SSDs use electronic ways to store information like a USB instead of a mechanical disc system.

Many users prefer SSD if the pocket allows them since, like all the good things in life, they are more costly.

#5 Hard Drive Connector Cable

The hard drive connector cable connects the hard drive to the motherboard.

These cables are usually SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) cables that transfer information at really high speeds from the hard drive to the motherboard.

Whenever you pull something up on your laptop, the motherboard asks the hard drive for that information via these connections, and they receive that information via the same connection. The hard drive connector cable also powers the hard drive by drawing power from the motherboard.

#6 Hard Drive Bracket

The hard drive bracket houses the Hard drive in the laptop.

The bracket holds the hard drive in one place so you, as the user, can tumble it around as you see fit. A few years ago, the hard drive brackets didn’t have any more purpose than this: To support and hold the drive.

#7 Fan

The fan on a laptop is the main cooling solution of a laptop.

It allows the laptop to expel heat from the laptop using air cooling.

The largest generators of heat on a laptop are the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).

All of this generated heat needs to be lead outside the computer. This is done via a heatsink and using copper tubes.

Good old conduction transfers the heat and transports the heat via the copper tubes to the fan, usually located underneath the laptop or on the backside.

The fan then expels all the heat via the vents. High-end laptops usually have more elaborate cooling solutions like having multiple fans and vents.

This is because the higher the power draw of a laptop, consequentially, more heat is generated that needs to be expelled.

A lot of high-end laptops these days also come with things called vapor chambers that further improve cooling.

#8 Heat Sink

A heat sink is also part of the cooling solution on the laptop.

Heat sinks are usually made of copper or aluminum and act as passive heat exchangers.

When your CPU chip produces heat, that heat is absorbed by the heat sink via conduction as long as the heat sink, and the CPU is in contact.

Well, not exactly in contact since they have a medium in between called thermal gel.

The thermal gel is applied to the CPU before the heatsink is placed on top of it so that there is a better heat exchange between the chip and the heat sink.

Once the heatsink has captured the heat, the heat travels towards the copper tubes towards the fans.

This is because heat travels from the hotter place to the cooler place.

And the side with the fan is always cooler than the side with the CPU and the heatsink.

#9 Power Connector Cable

The power connector cable gives the path to the power coming from the outside power port to the motherboard.

The power connector cable directly connects to the motherboard of the laptop, and then the motherboard distributes the power to all the other components like CPU, keyboard, display, and I/O ports, etc.

The power connector cable can be rated for different wattages. A higher wattage power connector cable means that it can support more power if the laptop charger can give it.

#10 Power Button/USB Board

The power button on the laptop is the main on and off switch laptop.

The power button turns down the system.

If you just close the lid of a laptop, you haven’t actually turned the laptop.

The laptop has basically gone into standby mode.

The power button turns down all the components of a laptop.

The USB board or the I/O port deck on a laptop is where you can find all the different ports of the laptop.

You will have a few USB ports, the power port where the laptop charger plugs in, display ports like VGA/HDMI to plug external displays, an Ethernet port, and even an SD card reading port.

Now, these ports can vary vastly from one laptop to the other. Usually, laptops with a smaller form factor have fewer ports than a much larger laptop.

This is because smaller laptops have less space for excessive ports. And if the laptop is very slim, like ultrabooks, these days, it might not be thick enough to have much larger ports physically.

It is always important to look at the USB board selection on a laptop before buying since that particular model may not have a port that you might need.

#11 System Board/ Motherboard

The System board is the main brain behind the whole operation. This is also known as the motherboard on regular PCs. The system board contains most of the electronic components that make a computer a computer.

Things like processors, GPUs, RAMs are all on the motherboard. Even storage devices like M.2 SSDs are also connected directly to the motherboard.

The main function of the motherboard is to connect all the different components of the laptop and act as a central power distribution point. Additionally, the operating system plays a crucial role in managing these hardware components, ensuring they work together efficiently on the system board.

#12 Solid State Drives (M.2)

We talked about the hard drive bracket previously.

Nowadays, with the advent of the SSDs, many drive brackets are on the motherboard itself with inbuilt slots where a smaller SSD drive can directly be inserted.

The M.2 slot is a pretty common slot for this.

These slots offer faster drive speeds and eliminate the need for a connector cable as the storage device is directly connected to the PC.

#13 Memory Modules

Memory Modules or RAM modules are the temporary storage space of a laptop.

RAM stands for random access memory and serves as temporary storage space while you work on your computer.

Let’s say you have a few files and a few internet tabs open. For faster response, your laptop stores this information on the RAM.

Because it is faster than storing these on your drives. The information leaves the RAM once you close the file or turn down the computer.

The memory module is a temporary resting place for information. Memory modules can come with various specs and capacities.

A single memory stick could be a 4 GB stick, an 8 GB stick, a 16 GB stick, or even a 32 GB stick. DDR4 and DDR3 are the most common memory generation being used in laptops these days.

DDR5 has technically been released for a year, but laptops and PCs supporting DDR5 have yet to come out.

DDR5 will offer one stick to support up to 64 GB per stick. Also, it is important to note how many memory slots your laptop supports and if the RAM is upgradable.

A lot of laptops have two upgradable memory slots. But sometimes, one memory slot is soldered to the motherboard, and there is only one slot to upgrade. Whenever upgrading memory, always remember that a dual-channel is always better.

So 2×8 GB sticks will perform optimally as compared to 1×8 GB and 1×16 GB.

#14 WLAN Module

The wireless LAN module is the main connection hub of the laptop. It houses the Wi-Fi card and the Bluetooth card to cater to the whole wireless connectivity of the laptop.

A good WLAN module can be the difference between a fast Wi-Fi experience and an inconsistent one. A lot of laptops these days do come with WLAN modules that can be swapped out and upgraded.

But most older laptops will have this directly soldered to the motherboard.

#15 Laptop Battery

The laptop battery is a crucial portable power storage device, enabling laptops to operate without being connected to a power outlet.

This is what powers the laptop when you don’t have it connected to a power source.

Like everything else we have talked about in a laptop, batteries can come in various shapes, sizes, and capacities.

Usually, a battery’s capacity is measured in milliamp hours. A typical battery can range between 2000 mAh and 6000 mAh. The battery timing on each laptop will vary vastly, even if they have the exact same battery.

This is because the battery life on a laptop is dependent upon power consumption and optimization.

The more power-hungry your system, the faster your laptop will drain. Laptops with higher resolution screens and higher refresh rates drain faster.

Laptops with higher-end CPU and GPUs also consume more power and drain faster.

But a decently optimized laptop can squeeze more out of the same battery even if both devices have similar components to power.

#16 Speakers

The speakers on a laptop are usually located on the bottom.

But some laptops do offer top-firing speakers as well. The speakers on a laptop are the main audio solution on the laptop.

Due to space constraints on a laptop, the laptop speakers will never be as good as dedicated audio solutions. A lot of people prefer to use headphones anyways when using laptops.

But if you don’t have headphones, then they can offer a really good alternative. In fact, some laptops even market speaker solutions on their laptop by top companies like bose, etc.

#17 Bottom Cover/ Back Plate

The bottom cover is the final line of defense between your laptop and all the nasty things in your environment, including external dust and other environmental factors that could harm the motherboard and internal components.

The bottom covers seal up all the contents from below, offering protection against external particles such as dust and liquid, ensuring the functionality and longevity of the electronic components.

The bottom cover can be taken off by unscrewing a few screws and taking it out.

This will expose the battery and all the other parts on a laptop.

Depending upon the laptop, some of these components may be upgradeable while others will be permanent and fixed.

Bottom covers are really diverse in a laptop these days.

Most of them come with rubber feet to lift the laptop from the surface a little bit.

This is useful if your laptop has a fan and vent at the bottom laptop.

What Are the Parts of a Laptop Charger?

Computer Randomly Restarts Understanding the Conundrum

Random restarts are not only inconvenient but can also lead to significant data loss, adding to your list of frustrations. Your PC might experience a computer randomly restart for various reasons, including:

System failures such as the infamous Blue Screen of Death

Overheating issues

Hardware or driver problems

Power supply issues, which may cause your computer to randomly restart

Software conflicts

In some cases, the restart may happen unexpectedly and restart automatically without an error message, leaving you in the dark about the cause.

The triggers of these restarts are diverse and can include:

Faulty hardware

Software issues

Inadequate ventilation

System instability

Software conflicts

Understanding these causes is the first step in resolving the pc randomly restarts issue.

Diagnosing Power Supply Problems

The power supply unit (PSU) is the heartbeat of your system, pumping life into all hardware components. An unstable or faulty PSU can be a prime suspect when your computer restarts randomly. A power supply tester can be a handy tool to check if your PSU is delivering adequate power and determine if a replacement is necessary.

If power issues persist after thorough testing, consider replacing your desktop PC’s power supply, a new PSU can breathe fresh life into your system and potentially fix random restarts. It’s crucial to ensure that the PSU has the capacity to handle high-demand situations and is in good health to maintain system stability.

Navigating Advanced System Settings

You might have noticed that your PC restarts automatically after a system failure. This automatic restart feature, while designed to recover from failures, can be a hindrance when troubleshooting as errors are not displayed. To prevent this, you can disable the automatic restart feature.

To disable automatic restart on your PC, follow these steps:

Navigate to ‘System Properties’ via the Control Panel.

Access ‘Startup and Recovery’ settings.

Find the option to disable automatic restart.
